Questions to Ask Staff or College Students

Earth laughs in flowers.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

The beloved book, Caring Spaces, written by Jim Greenman and recently revised by Mike Lindstrom, includes sections of questions to ask staff or college students to help them think about what is most important to include in children’s environments. Greenman urged people to discuss these questions together in groups.  Here is one section that focuses on the feeling of a place:

“1. Search your memories of childhood for magical moments. What made them magical?

 2. Compare your childhood to that of a child that you know. What experiences do they have that you didn’t? What are they missing out on?

3. List feelings and behaviors that you associate with the words school, play, home, learning, teaching.

4. Search your memory for the most rewarding moments you have had caring for or teaching children. What made them rewarding?”
