Observing Your Classroom
August 27, 2014
Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little.
-Edmund Burke

In Learning Together with Young Children, Deb Curtis and Margie Carter recommend that as a teacher you take a morning to keep track of what unfolds in your classroom:

"Notice the flow of the day, what children were involved with in general, and some specific times when you interacted with individuals or directed the group.  At the end of the morning, write down an account of what occurred in enough detail to jog your memory as you reflect on the following questions:

  • What impact did your curriculum activities and daily schedule have on your actions and decisions?
  • When might you have followed the children's ideas and interests, but didn't?
  • How did your image of children and their capabilities influence your actions?
  • When did you claim your power on behalf of more meaningful experiences for you and the children?"

Many curriculum books treat teaching as something you do to or for children. Deb Curtis and Margie Carter, bestselling authors in the early learning field, believe teaching is a collaborative process in which you reexamine your own philosophy and practices while facilitating children's learning.

Each chapter in this curriculum framework includes a conceptual overview followed by classroom stories and vibrant photos to illustrate the concepts.

You will learn to create materials and a classroom culture reflecting your values; teach through observation, reflection, inquiry and action; and encourage children to represent their learning in multiple ways, including songs, stories, and drama.
