The Importance of Stories
September 21, 2018
Never underestimate young children, for, if you do, you are bound to be surprised"
-Selma Wasserman, Serious Players in the Primary Classroom

“Throughout the years as I have worked with emergent readers – as a Title 1 Literacy Aide, as a Head Start intern, as an adult literacy volunteer, as a fifth-and sixth-grade aide, as a Montessori teacher, and as a preschool teacher, I grew to appreciate how personal experience, captured through narrative, supports the process of learning to read and write,” explains Laura Friedman in an article that forms the basis for an "Out of the Box" Training Kit on supporting children’s literacy.

Friedman discusses how she used a technique of storytelling (where she would weave tales about each child) to build “connections and relationships through imagery and narrative. The children came to understand each other in a deeper way as individuals, and they grew into a tighter-knit community by giving each other the opportunity to enrich the story with their personal experiences.”
