Are You Ready for International Mud Day?
May 30, 2019
The world is mud-luscious and puddle-wonderful.
-E. E. Cummings

International Mud Day will be celebrated in programs of all types on June 29 (or since it’s a Saturday in many places, it might be celebrated on the 28). Grab a cup of tea and visit Bonnie’s Global Café on the World Forum website to read about the origins of this wonderful event.

A helpful resource for ideas about muddy fun is the Out of the Box Training Kit, “A Muddy First: Play for Joy and Learning,” by Michael Follet, Kristian Hancock and Diana Suskind.

One of the ideas shared in the kit explained how adults in one program set up areas for children and parents to interact in together. Laminated signs invited investigation and play. Here are two examples:

One laminated sign said:

“Welcome to the Mud Ball Catapult.

  1. Make a mud ball.
  2. Load the catapult.
  3. Take aim at the hut wall.
  4. Fire!

Another sign said:

“Use the pots, pans, and kitchen utensils to create your own Mud Kitchen!

This area allows all chefs to appear. Using natural materials, cooks both young and old work together to make fine double-chocolate mud pies. And, oh, those muddy pancakes are a hit!”

The Out of the Box Training Kit, "A Muddy First: Play for Joy and Learning," helps teachers understand the benefits of mud play as a learning experience. They will learn ways to conduct and evaluate activities involving mud and other sensory play materials. As a result of this training, Learners will be able to explain the benefits, and prepare for, conduct, and evaluate a mud day or other messy play activity.
