Edible Plants and Other Possibilities to Ponder
September 4, 2020
Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.
-Helen Keller

“Like so many elements of a rich outdoor (and indoor) environment, it is up to us adults to make decisions on whether certain risks for children are worth the benefit of the activity,” wrote Rusty Keeler (author of the new book, Adventures in Risky Play) in an article that is the basis of the newest Exchange Reflections.

In “Edible Plants: Assessing Appropriate Risks in Outdoor Classrooms,” Keeler declares: “That goes for tall block building in the classroom, climbing up slides on the playground, and yes, whether to have a berry bush in your backyard. It, of course, depends on your circumstances, your children, your supervision style and care.” The Exchange Reflections invites discussion on how to assess appropriate risks and make decisions about outdoor experiences that are right for individual educators’ comfort levels.

Interested in registering for an Exchange Reflections discussion group facilitated by a Dimensions Foundation education specialist? A September 14 conversation will be based on the Exchange Reflections called “Transforming Environments, Transforming Behavior.” We’ll have a lively conversation about ways outdoor environments can support positive behavior - especially during this time when so much has changed in children’s lives.
