Strengths-Based Approaches to Challenging Behavior - Free Video
December 10, 2020
Focus on your strengths, not your weaknesses. Focus on your blessings, not your misfortunes.
-Roy T. Bennet

We would like to make one of the videos on Ed.Flicks, “Strength-Based Approaches to Challenging Behavior,” available to everyone as a free gift for a limited time, since we know this continues to be such a needed topic to address. The premise of the video is that finding and supporting children’s strengths promotes positive behavior. In the video clip, Camille Catlett says:

“It’s so important to make the shift from ‘this child can’t do that,’ to ‘what CAN this child do?' Our job is to see and tap into and grow that capability.”

And in their book, From Teaching to Thinking: A Pedagogy of Reimagining Our Work, Ann Pelo and Margie Carter write about the importance of listening more than talking so we can truly learn about children in an authentic way. They declare: “We fling questions at children, one after the other, a rapid-fire sequence of queries that bear little relevance to a child’s pursuits and that hold little interest for us or for the child. What color is that? How many blocks in your tower? What letter does your name start with?”
