Remembering Eloise Greenfield and Encouraging Future Writers
September 3, 2021
Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.
-Albert Einstein

Great friend of Exchange, Margie Carter, shared this notice of the death of marvelous author of children’s literature, Eloise Greenfield. As Margie said, be sure to listen to her rap video!

Rebecca Giles, in her book, A Young Writer’s World: Creating Early Childhood Classrooms Where Authors Abound, asks early care and education practitioners to encourage the next generation of writers. She explains: “A positive experience sets the tone for future efforts and often leads to a desire to continue writing. It is essential that young children learn in a classroom that promotes and acknowledges their early attempts at writing, while providing numerous experiences worthy of recording in print."

A new Exchange Reflections, "Writing and Dramatic Play: Perfect Partners," based on an article by Giles, provides a wealth of information to discuss about using dramatic play as an inspiration for children's writing.

Here’s an idea: Read some Eloise Greenfield and celebrate her life as a writer. Then help children believe in their own creative abilities by putting into practice some of Rebecca Giles’ wonderful, innovative suggestions from the new Reflections.

Great information; article! I shared with our local Workforce Solutions Board which oversees subsidized child care and workforce centers in Texas. I also shared with my own board of directors and leadership staff. The videos are very powerful as well! The 3rd one is a great advocacy piece while the other two provide a great overview and information related to accessing funding. Thanks again!

Thank you for this memorial and reminding us about Eloise life not just her passing. Honey I Love was a staple in all my classrooms from Head Start to Vassar!
