Tiny Films through Tiny Eyes
December 15, 2023
I think that childhood is the very first chapter in your book and if we're going to have a whole story, a whole life, then we've got to know what childhood is about.
-Bev Bos, 1934-2016, preschool director and international speaker

Calling all budding film artists, of all ages! The 2024 World Forum on Early Care and Education will feature its first-ever Tiny Film Festival. Whether you submit a short video or not, the questions framing the festival offer all of us a chance to reflect, especially on how young children experience the environments where they spend their days. The call for submissions asks,

"What do [children] love, hold dear, or wish for as part of their daily journey at your program? What creates those moments of magic and wonder?"

They offer these additional questions to provide a framework for the videos:

  • What makes the environment special, unique and transformative from a social, environmental or educational perspective?
  • What do children love or hold dear in regard to their environment (at the school)?
  • If they could, what would a child create or build or add to the environment to add value and depth to their experiences?

Finally, prioritizing children’s participation and perspectives, the organizers note, "films should be shot by, for, and with children, and should focus on the world of the child in your environment." Deadline for submissions is March 10, 2024.

The World Forum on Early Care and Education, a global gathering of over 500 early childhood professionals from around the world, is April 16-19, 2024, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Early bird registration rates end December 31, 2023.
