Fundraising Feedback

FUNDRAISING FEEDBACK

It is never predictable which ExchangeEveryDay messages will generate significant feedback.  Here are a sampling of the responses to the May 9 message, "THE FRUITLESS FUNDRAISER":

Judy Kilgore, Children's Hospital Boston Child Care Center:  "If the only purpose of an event is to raise money, then your article is certainly accurate.  However, in my experience in the child care setting, there are often additional reasons for such an event, the principle ones being community building; getting all staff to work towards a common goal and have fun together; bringing parents, grandparents, cousins, siblings into the action.  We recently worked for three months expanding our arts program with the children, starting with a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts and culminating with an Art Show with a museum shop.  All of the children felt very proud of their work and the fact that people actually paid to purchase it!  Parents of many different cultural backgrounds were involved in various classroom art endeavors like working with clay, painting and, during the show, playing the violin for background atmosphere!  Children were exposed to art terms and forms such as abstract painting, still life, etching, sculpture, print making, texture and form in clay, and many more.  Teachers learned a great deal about how to facilitate children's open ended art in various media and how to display it in a respectful manner.  We raised enough money to purchase a digital camera and to pay for the extra quality art materials.  The rewards for this effort were multiple!"

Marni Sweet:  "You can't do too many articles about fundraising ideas for centers to try. Unfortunately, we are all going to have to do them for a long time! We have done a plant sale for 20 years that raises more each year (not from ourselves) and this year reached $13,000. I'd be glad to tell others about it in your next article on the subject. However, we need another really innovative event that will generate as much, so I hope that article comes soon."

Lisa Asselborn, Staples Child Care Center:  "In child care, sometimes the fundraisers are a way of bringing the community together.  It is not always about raising the money.  Thank you for this (and all your daily notes) I find them very useful, I just didn't want that point to be lost in the 'money hunt.'"
