Children, Families and Technology

When we deny children play, we are denying them the right to understand the world.
Erika Christakis, educator and writer

In the "Bridging Research and Practice" section of the September/October, 2017 Exchange magazine, Angela Fowler, in her response to Heather Kirkorian’s research, writes about how teachers can support families in making decisions about appropriately using technology with their children:

"Valuable information for families comes from Dr. Kirkorian and AAP guidelines, which both recommend that technology has the most value when used jointly by adults and children.

It is important for teachers to understand that they are models for parents and that they can be technology and media mentors. Ignoring technology altogether or failing to share how they intentionally use technology does not support parents' need to also develop appropriate family technology practices. So collaborate with parents and share why and when you use technology. This will help parents engage in good technology practices at home as well."
