Encourage Leadership at All Levels
If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.
Booker T. Washington
Debra Sullivan, in the book Leading Early Childhood Organizations, shares the following principles for encouraging and supporting people to take leadership responsibilities across all levels of an organization:
- "Leadership can emerge anywhere. Keep your eyes open!
- Don't be in charge of everything…
- Everyone should be in charge of at least one thing
- People often rise to the level that is expected of them. If you do not expect leadership, you probably won’t find it…
- Create a work environment where it’s ok to make mistakes…It’s part of the learning process for adults.
- Learn about everyone’s unique gifts, strengths and contributions and find a place for these in the leadership process. If you don’t know, find out."
