Imaginative Play – Without it Children Miss Out

“Research builds a very strong case that childhood play is a required experience in order to become a civilized, fully-realized human being,” writes Karen Stephens in an Exchange magazine article that serves as the foundation for an Out of the Box Training Kit.

“Put another way,” she explains, “these are skills, knowledge, and dispositions that children are at risk of not developing if deprived of enough free time, space, and opportunity for creative play:

abstract and symbolic thinking, decision-making, creative problem solving and goal setting;
complex language development…
emotional awareness and competence…
social skills, such as patience, cooperation, negotiation, non-violent conflict resolution…
formation of a moral or ethical code that distinguishes right from wrong, respect for others’ rights and ability to work toward the greater good.”
