Educators as Forensic Detectives?

“I find so much of what is done in the name of training both disheartening and demeaning,” writes Margie Carter in From Teaching to Thinking, the book she co-wrote with Ann Pelo. “We could, instead, immerse educators in a culture of inquiry, with structures that support them to think together, nudge new perspectives and take initiative….

Deb Curtis and I invented activities with metaphors that characterized the roles of a teacher, wanting to scaffold educators’ thinking away from the banking model of ‘drill and fill’ (which also rhymes with kill). We’d invite educators to consider how they’d use the skills of a gardener, knitter, architect, newscaster, and forensic detective in their work as teachers. We’d explore what dispositions they would need for each of these roles.”
