Study Yourself

The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal, you can get there if you're willing to work.
Oprah Winfrey

In the Out of the Box training kit, “Seeing How Children See Us,” Deb Curtis writes about a child who asked a teacher, “Are you happy?” The teacher answered, “Yes, of course I am,” to which the child replied, “Then you should tell your face that.”

Curtis urges teachers to study themselves to revisit core values about teaching and what we want to reflect to children. Here are a few of her self-reflection questions:

“To begin, brainstorm a list of what you believe children deserve when they spend their days with you.

Next, generate a specific list of the roles you will play to support these core values…

As you interact with children, be attentive to your actions and how you communicate the values you hope to encourage in them.”
