A Time for Reimagining

What people think of as the moment of discovery is really the discovery of the question.
Jonas Salk

First Ann Pelo and Margie Carter wrote their popular book, From Teaching to Thinking, that begins by inviting early childhood administrators, educators and advocates to explore two questions: “What kind of people do we want to be? What kind of world do we want to live in?”

Then a series of follow-up books, called the Reimagining Our Work (ROW) Collection, were published. In each of these books, innovative educators write about how they are living out the ideas in From Teaching to Thinking.

Here is what Ann and Margie write about Bridgette Towle and Angela Heape, authors of one of the ROW books, Cup: “As they tell the story of an unexpected, year-long immersion in cups, these two masterful teacher researchers illuminate the full-hearted, deeply thoughtful work of education. We listen as they consider what compels the children about the cups, and how they might join the children’s dance with cups as active participants inquiring alongside the children.”

The times we are living in today offer both an opportunity and an urgency to explore one more question Ann and Margie pose at the beginning of their inspiring work:

“What is the purpose of education, and how do we go about achieving it?”
