Care as First Literacy

We claim that in order to induce transformative change in human-nature relations we need a shift from a morality of utility to a morality of care.
Roldan Muradian, Economist, Brazil, and Gómez-Baggethun, Professor, Norwegian University of Life Sci

"I’ve been thinking about care as first literacy. We get excited about seeing babies look at books, but when a baby gazes into the eyes of the people who care for them—and experiences connection—it is a much deeper intellectual literacy lesson than a book can offer," shared Carol Garboden Murray recently.

She went on to note, "Eye gaze, body language, facial expression, imitation, comfort with another, the subtleties and complexities of communication including perspective taking—it all begins with care, and it’s foundational literacy."

Join Garboden Murray, author of Illuminating Care, with Editor-in-Chief Sara Gilliam and Kirsten Haugen of Exchange Press, in a rich, interactive exploration of care at the NAEYC Conference in Washington, DC, on Friday, November 18, 2022, 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm in Washington Convention Center, Room 151A.
