Intentional Teaching Makes the Biggest Impact on Early Childhood Outcomes
March 28, 2018
I grow more intense as I age.
-Florida Scott-Maxwell

A posting on the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute website states: "A comprehensive review of research on several measures of the quality of early childhood education suggests that the instructional practices of preschool teachers have the largest impact on young children’s academic and social skills. The review helps untangle a complicated knot of factors that affect young children.

'High quality preschool is one of the most effective means of preparing all children to succeed in school,' said Margaret Burchinal, senior research scientist at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute (FPG) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 'However, this review of research indicates the need to expand our definitions of quality.'"

The Intentional Teacher

Educators must act with knowledge and purpose to make sure young children acquire the skills and understanding they need to succeed. Intentional teachers keep in mind the key goals for children's learning and development in all domains by creating supportive environments, planning curriculum, and selecting from a variety of teaching strategies that best promote each child's thinking and skills.

Did the researchers have specific suggestions about how we should expand our definitions of quality?
