What Unites Us?
May 30, 2018
If an elephant can be angry, so can the wood ant.
-African Proverb

Dan Rather, writing in his new book, What Unites Us, talks about the importance of moving from a stated belief in inclusion to action in our personal lives. He explains:

"Some of the most segregated school districts are in the most liberal cities—like New York and San Francisco. What lessons are we teaching our children? We may support social programs that we think help those who are disadvantaged or who have faced discrimination, but if we do not fully engage in a spirit of inclusion on a personal level, we are failing.

One often finds the greatest lack of empathy in those who were born lucky. They tend to misidentify that luck as the superiority of their character."
