Support in Times of Uncertainty
March 16, 2020
I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.
-Nelson Mandela

An online resource from Child Care Aware is available to help early childhood professionals deal with uncertainty about coronavirus. The beginning of the document explains:

"The Child Care Aware® of America (CCAoA) Emergency Preparedness team is committed to ensuring the child care sector has the support it needs in times of uncertainty. Emergency preparedness, response and recovery is vital for the well-being of children, families and communities.

We understand that you may feel confused or unsure about how the Coronavirus (COVID-19) could potentially affect your program, staff, children and families that you serve. We have heard your questions and continue to research and share up-to-date resources and solutions. This week, we are drawing attention to several guidance documents, leading practices and training tools that can assist you in the coming weeks." And, in the Exchange Essentials collection called “Emotional Well-being,” author Jamie Boncyzyk has written an article called “Caring for Ourselves So That We Can Care for Others.” Her advice is all the more important as we deal with uncertainty:

“Having a self-care plan is critical for all early childhood professionals. Self-care helps us reduce stress and improves the quality of our lives. These plans help us tap into our inner resources to build resilience, to practice adaptability, and to create positive change. If we want to not only maintain but also grow our stamina for this field, we must take care of ourselves.

Self-care is the practice of intentionally working to create or maintain a healthy and vibrant life. Creating a plan for self-care helps you develop habits or behaviors that keep you refreshed. Self-care plans also help you restore areas of your life that may feel depleted at the end of the day, week, or month."

Another great resource is a free webinar on March 20th at 2:00 PM EST from Early Childhood Investigations Webinars called "Bracing for COVID-19: What Early Childhood Programs Need to Know and Consider Now."
