Building Foundations for Democracy
February 18, 2021
I salute the light within your eyes where the whole Universe dwells. For when you are at that center within you and I am at that place within me, we shall be one.
-Crazy Horse (1840-1877) Oglala Lakota Sioux

In his powerful new book, A Can of Worms: Fearless Conversations with Toddlers, Nick Terrones discusses the importance of rich conversations with young children:

"Over my time in early childhood education, I’ve come to understand my work as building the social and emotional foundations for democracy, and, really, for global citizenship. Two key skills for participants in a democracy are the capacity to hold complexity and to understand multiple truths and perspectives. For democracy to thrive, its members need to be able to talk and think together across our differing experiences, perspectives, and values."

Toddlers ask big, bold questions every day. Teachers and caregivers give shape to the world as they respond to those questions. The conversation unfolds in an electric moment - an awkward, exciting, bewildering moment. We may be surprised or taken aback, but the disequilibrium is a gift. With courage and care, we can connect with children at the level of curiosity and meaning.

Written with trust in the wisdom and capacity of young children and the adults who care for them, and with belief in what is possible when children and adults come together in these electric moments, A Can of Worms is a guide and support for celebrating these most important conversations. Have no fear! Take a deep breath, and respond.

That is the embedded value of bilingual - you automatically know that there are two different ways to say the same thing.

It is also the embedded value of growing up around diversity - across the many variables and wide ranges this can take, given that diversity is contextual.
