Creating a Community of Learners
August 26, 2021
When one is a stranger to oneself then one is estranged from others too. If one is out of touch with oneself, then one cannot touch others.
-Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Ann Pelo and Margie Carter’s brilliantly supportive and well-loved book, From Teaching to Thinking, invites us to consider a new way of being. They write:

“Professional learning is not about getting individual teachers up to speed with discreet aspects of their work, nor is it about ensuring that the whole staff is on board with the latest development in the Quality Rating System. Professional learning is focused on bringing teachers, children, families, and administrators together as a research collective – as a community that learns…its touchstone considerations are ‘Who are we as a community?’ and ‘How will we live into our vision?’”

Since the publication of their book, Pelo and Carter have lived what they wrote by creating a nation-wide community of learners. They invited diverse educators to demonstrate what it means to reimagine our early childhood work by telling their stories of innovative classroom practices. These stories are being published by Exchange Press in what we are calling the Reimagining Our Work (ROW) book collection.

And Pelo and Carter, along with Exchange, have launched the “Reimagining Our Work (ROW) Initiative” which seeks to build a community of thinkers anchored in relationships that allow for substantive, open-hearted, intellectually rigorous dialogue and reimagining.

Want to join the ROW conversations? Your voice is needed and welcome. Learn more about The Reimagining Our Work (ROW) Initiative.

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s EED for inspirational words from ROW educator authors.
